What Is a Mobile Device?
A mobile device is a portable computing device designed to be used while a person is moving between locations. Common examples include smartphones, tablets, e-readers, smartwatches, and other connected handheld devices. Unlike traditional desktop systems, mobile devices combine computing power, wireless networking, sensors, cameras, batteries, touchscreens, and communication tools in a compact form.
Mobile devices have also become important workplace tools. NIST notes that these devices are permanent fixtures in modern enterprises and are used to access networks, systems, and sensitive information. (NIST, 2023)
Common Types
Smartphones
Combine cellular communication with apps, internet access, cameras, GPS, messaging, biometric sensors, and multimedia.
Tablets
Use larger touch displays and are useful for reading, presentations, drawing, media consumption, field work, and education.
Wearables
Smartwatches and fitness devices can provide notifications, health-related sensors, location services, and short-range connectivity.
Important Components
Although mobile devices are small, they contain many of the same basic computing elements found in larger computers: a processor, memory, storage, an operating system, input and output devices, and networking hardware. They also commonly contain cameras, microphones, speakers, accelerometers, gyroscopes, GPS receivers, biometric readers, and near-field communication features.
Mobile Operating Systems
The operating system manages the hardware and allows applications to run. It also controls permissions, networking, files, notifications, user accounts, updates, and many security functions. Keeping the operating system and applications updated is important because updates can fix software defects and security weaknesses.
