Good maintenance improves reliability, protects data, and can help a laptop remain useful for longer.

Battery Health

Most modern laptops use lithium-ion batteries. Microsoft explains that lithium-ion battery capacity gradually decreases as batteries are charged and discharged, and recommends avoiding frequent deep discharges and excessive heat. It also suggests keeping charge within a moderate range—roughly 20% to 80% when practical—to help slow degradation. (Microsoft, n.d.)

Heat and Airflow

Processors and other electronic components generate heat during operation. Laptops use vents, fans, heat sinks, and heat pipes to control temperature. Blocking vents by using a laptop on a soft surface can reduce airflow. Dust buildup may also reduce cooling efficiency over time.

Battery Warning Signs

Battery life naturally becomes shorter as cells age. Microsoft warns that a severely deteriorated battery may hold very little charge or visibly expand. A swollen battery should be treated as a safety issue, and the device should no longer be used until it can be handled appropriately. (Microsoft, n.d.)

Best practice: Preventive maintenance is usually easier than recovering from lost data, heat damage, malware, or a failed battery.
